Extreme Cold

Protect yourself from the Cold Weather!

In the event of an extreme cold emergency, the County may choose to open warming centers.  If so, there will be information at this number with the location and hours of operation.

Please be aware that general information is also available 24 hours a day by calling “211”. You will be connected with a United Way service worker.

  • Whether indoors or outside, exposure to very cold temperatures can cause serious or life threatening health problems.  Infants and the elderly are particularly at risk, but anyone can be affected.
  • When you are outdoors wear several layers of loose fitting, light weight warm clothing, rather than one layer of heavy clothing.  Also be aware that the wind can increase your risk of cold exposure.
  • If your home is too cold please seek help, beginning with other family members or neighbors.
  • Do not use equipment indoors that is intended for outdoor use such as charcoal barbecues or propane since these may cause a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Never leave children unattended near a space heater, since the child could be burned.
  • If you need to speak with a public health nurse one is available from 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday at 558-7400.
